Manage Your Water Use for Big Savings
Did you know that shortening your shower by one minute saves approximately two gallons of water? Or that heating water using a heat pump water heater versus a standard electric water heater uses less energy by up to 70%? If reducing your water use, fixing a leak, or lowering the cost of heating your water is important to you, there are great resources available to you throughout the City Light service area!
The Saving Water Partnership is a great place to start. They are an organization comprised of 19 water utilities (including Seattle Public Utilities) and cover most of the water utilities in City Light’s service area. They offer tips, tools, and rebates to preserve our region’s water for future generations. Check out the rebates to see if anything is right for you!
If using less energy and managing your City Light bill is important to you, we offer rebates on energy-efficient heat pump water heaters, high-efficiency laundry appliances, and thermostatic shut-off valves for your home.
- If you have a dishwasher, use it! Washing by hand typically uses more water!
- Shorten your shower! If a family of four shortens their daily showers by one minute, that would result in about 240 gallons of water saved in one month.
- Run full loads in your washer and dishwasher!
- Use a broom versus a hose or pressure washer to clean patios, decks, driveways, etc.
- Pay attention to your usage on your water bill. This not only helps you with how much you’re using but helps spot a leak quickly! Leaks account for 12% of indoor water use in homes nationally. Detecting and fixing a leak quickly is key to preventing water waste and extra costs on your water bill.
It doesn’t matter if you own or rent your home, there are many ways to save water and energy to help you lower utility bills. Not to mention the good you will be doing to help reduce the impact on the resources we all share.
